STUDENTS VISIT TO MUSLIM CULTURAL CENTER
December, 2023
At the beginning of December 2023, as part of the course Challenges of Globalization, which is now conducted under the EU-GlobalAct module (led by Assistant Professor Dr. Janja Mikulan), students visited the Muslim Cultural Center in Ljubljana. The students toured the entire complex, including the interior of the mosque, and learned about the history of Islam in the Republic of Slovenia and the history of the center's construction, which represents the result of the Islamic community's long-standing efforts to establish their own religious and cultural center.
Bevk Perović Architects, who designed the building and received the Plečnik Award for it, aimed to create a project that is rooted in tradition while being contemporary—a hybrid of traditional Islamic values and the modern world, integrating the Islamic religious community with Slovenian society. Special thanks go to the MKC for their hospitality and the excellent tour conducted by Mag. Ela Porić, which greatly impressed the attendees. Below, we share some impressions from our students about the visit:
"I had the opportunity to visit the mosque, and its architecture impressed me with its rich culture. With the guide, we visited the library, which is a center for learning and exchange. I greatly admired this facility as it preserves and maintains cultural heritage. I was also interested in the story of choosing this specific location for the cultural center. It made me realize the value of cultural discourse and the harmonious coexistence of different communities in this area." (E.H.)
"I thought the tour was fantastic, with a friendly guide, not to mention the architecture. The minimalist architecture, where every detail has its significance, simply captivated me. Throughout the tour, I felt truly welcomed, somewhat at peace, and it saddens me that people still have 'cultural barriers' related to the Islamic community." (K.Š.)
