EU-GlobalAct Panel at the 18th Slovenian Social Science Conference
October, 2025
On 17 October 2025, the Jean Monnet Module "EU as a Global Actor in a Fragmented and Traumatized World (EU-GlobalAct)", led by Assist. Prof. Dr. Janja Mikulan, held a special panel as part of the 18th Slovenian Social Science Conference (SSSC) – “Building Resilient Sociologies in an Era of Global Disruptions” – and the Fourth Jean Monnet Day.
🎓 Sharing Achievements and Experiences
In the first part of the panel, the team presented the module’s main activities and achievements from 2024–2025. As the project has a strong educational focus, the discussion featured Assist. Manca Koren, who shared insights into her teaching methods, and students Boštjan Polanec and Shravan Sasidharan, who reflected on their learning experiences within EU-GlobalAct. We also heard from Assist. Nejc Gajšek, a member of the module team and course instructor.
🎬 Documentary Premiere: “Through a Shattered Lens”
The presentation was followed by the pre-premiere of the documentary “Through a Broken Lens: A Story of Trauma, Extremism and the Possibility of Healing”, directed by Assist. Prof. Dr. Mikulan. The film captivated the audience and received an enthusiastic response.
🌐 Exploring Power, Vulnerability & Resilience
The second part of the panel featured four international research presentations examining power relations, vulnerability, and social resilience in today’s crisis contexts — from local conflicts to digital dependency and authoritarian regimes. The authors highlighted issues of inequality, surveillance, and loss of sovereignty that threaten social cohesion, while also proposing pathways from vulnerability to resilience through community-based, participatory, and digitally sovereign approaches.
🤝 Bridging Academia, Education & Art
The event once again underscored the importance of connecting academic debate, education, and artistic expression to better understand and address the complex global challenges of our time.
